Psychology is grounded in the scientific study of brain, mind and behaviour. Psychologists are professionals who, after completing at least six years of higher education, assessments, and clinical training, become registered psychologists with the Australian Health Practitioners Regulation Agency (AHPRA).
Psychological counselling involves discussing thoughts, feelings, and behaviors that may be causing distress and not helping the person with healthy ways of functioning or coping. The therapeutic relationship aims to offer a safe emotional environment to explore these issues and develop strategies to enhance mental health and overall well-being
At each session we explore your mental wellbeing by asking questions, reviewing a journal or filling out small questionnaires such as the Depression, Anxiety and Stress Scale.
Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is a short-term therapy for changing unhelpful or unhealthy thoughts and behaviours. It helps people problem-solve by exploring the relationship between one’s beliefs, thoughts, and feelings and behaviors.
Acceptance Commitment Therapy (ACT) can be short or long term therapy. We work on understanding that life does include suffering, and we work on strategies and learn to reduce the impact and influence unwanted thoughts and feelings have on us through the effective use of mindfulness among other techniques.
Solution-focused (brief) Therapy (SFBT) is a goal-directed collaborative approach to psychological change through asking questions to find solutions. It incorporates positive psychology principles and practices, and helps clients change by coming up with solutions rather than focusing on issues.
Interpersonal Therapy is a brief, attachment-focused psychotherapy. It focuses on current relationships. By exploring those relationships and interpersonal experiences it aims to resolve interpersonal problems and alleviate psychological distress such as grief and loss or conflict in relationships.
Somatic Experiencing was developed by Dr Peter Levine. It is a body orientated psychotherapy approach. It teaches people to focus on, and learn to track sensations, in their body, to increase their awareness and teaching people to notice their body and focus on the felt sense, track sensation in the body. This process help builds capacity in psychosomatic and felt sense and works to increase awareness of the body and release stuck energy. ‘Waking the Tiger’ By Dr Peter Levine is a good book to read to understand trauma and this therapeutic technique.
