A supervisor is a qualified, registered mental health practitioner, such as a psychologist, with extensive experience in therapeutic work with various client groups or specialisations in specific mental health fields. Supervisors have undergone further intensive training in incorporating horses into psychological treatments and have contributed to research, training, and publications in the field. They provide supervision to practitioners supporting recovery from trauma, mental health care, relational issues, and personal development.
Clinical supervision ensures competence and professionalism in human healthcare. Equine-assisted therapy is rapidly growing, with numerous training programs worldwide. Practitioners range from highly trained individuals to those passionate about helping others without formal qualifications.
Research into the effectiveness of equine-assisted therapy is gaining support, though more evidence is needed. Like other mental health interventions, ethical equine-assisted therapy requires ongoing supervision to ensure best practices and client safety. The power imbalance in therapeutic relationships presents opportunities for client harm, making quality supervision crucial to prevent harm and optimise outcomes. Supervision focuses on understanding both human and horse behavior and psychology, supporting the well-being and safety of all involved.
Naomi, with over 16 years of experience in equine-assisted therapy, provides supervision adhering to ethical standards set by professional bodies such as APRHA, ASW, ACA, and PAFCA, as well as equine welfare Acts and legislation, and safety requirements from Horse Safety Australia.
